Bistro launches to get back to the roots of Norfolk food

in News

Roots, a brand new bistro, café and farm shop has opened in Pottergate, Norwich, serving locally sourced food to those looking for a fine dining experience without the dress code.

RootsRooted in the oldest part of the city, Norwich Lanes, the business has been set up by friends Richard Lang and Claire Yaxley who are hoping to support Norfolk’s food and drink producers.

Inspired by Richard’s fond childhood memories of growing vegetables with his granddad and Claire’s farming background, a shop at the front of the bistro sells ingredients used in meals. Customers can buy fresh, local produce including baker’s grade flour, artisan bread from Norwich, fruit grown in an orchard in Dereham and honey from Hockering and attempt to recreate their favourite dish at home.

Described by customers as a “hidden gem”, Roots has a large restaurant upstairs, café downstairs and a courtyard. The grade II listed building was restored over nine months and has an eclectic feel with up-cycled tables and chairs.

The perfect place to enjoy afternoon tea, dinner, a Sunday roast or escape the office for lunch, the delicious autumn menu includes:

• Hanger steak with a carrot puree, pink fur apple and chard hash with a juniper jus • Chicken supreme, fig brown sauce with cabbage, smoked bacon & dripping potatoes • Beetroot brownie and custard.

Richard believes it’s important for customers to know where their food comes from and has sourced the finest produce from around the county, including:

– Oysters from Brancaster – Tomatoes from Horstead – Winberri wine from Surlingham – Norfolk cordial – Coffee from neighbour Wilkinsons – just a few doors away.

Richard adds: “I’m passionate about our region and providing as much home-grown produce as possible so we’re working hard on finding local suppliers to keep our food miles down. Since opening, we have been thrilled with the response. Customers are giving us really positive reviews and enjoy our relaxed approach combined with excellent food and drink.”
