Launching home-grown Baked British Beans to the UK
in News
Britain’s only home-grown baked beans launched recently during Farmhouse Breakfast Week.
And we were delighted to be brought on board for a national PR campaign to spread the word.
Did you know over 1.5 million cans of baked beans are sold every day in the UK? But the commonly used navy beans aren’t grown on British farms as they do not grow well in our climate.
Well now fans of buying British can get hold of home-grown Baked British Beans, thanks to one Norfolk based company – Hodmedod’s – who are on a mission to get the humble fava bean back on our plates.
Fava beans are a type of broad bean harvested dry, and one of the oldest cultivated crops in the UK, eaten as far back as the Iron Age. Yet most of the 500,000 tonnes grown in our country are exported to the Mediterranean, North Africa and Middle East.
Hodmedod’s growing range of British-grown peas and beans are supplied to independent retailers UK-wide and an increasing number of restaurants, including Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage Canteens.
Their latest canned range, featuring Baked British Beans, British Fava Beans in water and British Vaal Dhal can all be cooked from the can in under three minutes, making it easier and quicker than ever to enjoy the humble British fava bean.
Targeting media including regional, national, consumer, Vegetarian, Vegan and food bloggers, coverage has already included Anglia TV, BBC Radio Norfolk, a front page mention with the Eastern Daily Press and online coverage with well-known food bloggers.
With more yet to come!
Managing director Nick Saltmarsh, says: “We’re very excited about putting British grown fava beans back on the map and have been overwhelmed by the positive response to our dried fava beans so far.
We hope the nation’s bean lovers will also enjoy our new canned products and we look forward to seeing lots of new recipes using this fantastic, versatile ingredient.”
Hodmedod’s products are available to buy from www.hodmedods.co.uk and independent wholefood outlets across the UK.
