Homeowners boost income through their spare bedroom
in News
More people than ever before are renting our their spare room to Theatre Digs Booker, a website helping people rent rooms to theatre cast and crew whilst they are on tour.
As homeowners take advantage of the Government’s Rent A Room Scheme, some of the UK’s 15 million empty spare bedrooms are seeing visitors stay over, earning property owners up to £4,250 a year tax-free.
Theatre Digs Boooker, a website offering short-term digs across the UK to theatre cast and crew, has seen a 70% rise in bookings this year after launching in 2010.
Phil Barley, an actor who spent seven years touring with theatre productions set up the site in 2010 after struggling to find decent digs.
Phil says: “People haven’t seen their wages increase in a long while so this is an easy way of renting out their spare room and making some extra cash from their property – probably the biggest investment they’ll make in their lifetime.
We have been blown away with the popularity of the website. I think it’s because people see it as a great way to make some money from interesting, temporary lodgers.
“Most of our hosts enjoy the experience as they like meeting people, from engineers to stars of the stage and they are especially pleased to open the door to a famous actor!”
