Five PR myths you should ignore
in News
Many people don’t know exactly what PR is, they often confuse it with advertising and believe it’s expensive.
Here are five myths we frequently encounter and why you should ignore them:
1) PR is only for large companies. The problem many small businesses face is competing with larger more established competitors as they face the challenge of people knowing who they are. But PR raises profiles so is infact perfect for small and start-up businesses.
2) PR agencies just do press releases. Again this is something many people get wrong. While press releases are a very effective PR tool, PR agencies will offer a range of services to meet a client’s brief. These include feature and award writing, social media management, online PR, blog writing, crisis management, PR training and event management.
3) You need to sign up to a long campaign. A PR campaign generally gets better results as you are building your profile and reputation over a longer period of time but one off projects can work well too. For example, if you have an event coming up, a PR agency can help to organise or promote it. In the current economic climate, it’s very important to be flexible so a good PR agency will tailor their approach.
4) PR is all about spin. When choosing a PR agency, look for one that is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations as they will sign up to a code of conduct which also includes social media campaigns.
5) You can’t measure PR. This used to be the case but activity can be measured, for example, digital PR is very easy to measure. The way it is evaluated all depends on a client’s objectives.
I hope that gives you more of an insight into the world of PR and has dispelled some of the myths you may have previously believed.
